What is Low Testosterone?

Low Testosterone is a condition that has been getting a lot of attention lately. This is primarily due to an increasing awareness about how this condition can impact men as well as advancements in treatment. Today, there is less stigma associated with the impacts of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction – to name just a couple symptoms.

What Are the Warning Signs?

There are several warning signs that could mean you have Low-T. The best way to know for sure is to schedule an appointment with an experienced physician who specializes in male reproductive issues.

  1. Low Sex Drive: While most men will experience some decline in sex drive as they get older, a rapid decline could mean you are suffering from low testosterone. If your drop in sex drive feels drastic, it could be time to talk to a doctor.
  2. Trouble Getting an Erection: If you find achieving and maintaining an erection more difficult, it could also be a sign of low testosterone. While testosterone is not the sole cause of an erection, it plays a key role in your sex drive and signaling your brain to create an erection.
  3. Lack of Energy:Many men who have Low-T experience a significant decrease in energy and extreme fatigue. If you get plenty of exercise, lots of sleep and still feel fatigued throughout the day, you could have low testosterone levels.
  4. Hair Loss: Testosterone is involved with the production of hair. While hair loss is simply an unavoidable part of aging for many men, low testosterone may cause a loss of facial and body hair.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is the hormone that drives much of what makes a man a man. Its levels increase during puberty, which is when men grow stronger muscles and experience penis and testes growth. Throughout adulthood, testosterone continues to play an important role. It keeps muscles and bones strong and ensures a man maintains his interest in sex.

A gradual decline in testosterone typically begins around age 30, but for some, the decline is more rapid and pronounced. In these cases, treatment for Low-T could be the most viable option. For younger men, testosterone injections are an effective for of treatment when low testosterone is having an impact on fertility.

When fertility is not an issue, a daily gel or patch can be prescribed to boost testosterone levels.
